Guide to Public Records in Vermont

The Vermont Public Records Act mandates that all written or recorded information produced or acquired during public agency operations, including school district activities, be accessible for public examination, in alignment with the Vermont Constitution, while safeguarding individual privacy rights.

To assist in understanding these obligations, the Vermont School Boards Association (VSBA) has developed a concise two-page guide on public records in Vermont, tailored for school boards' reference and training purposes. Note that Vermont law requires annual joint training for board chairs and superintendents to cover topics including access to public records (16 V.S.A. § 561(b)).

We hope this guide will be a valuable tool in fulfilling that requirement and enhancing your board's compliance and transparency practices.
